Your anecdotal evidence comparing non goodyear welted Red Wing boots to (probably) goodyear welted Danner boots is like comparing apples and oranges. Red Wing is a much larger company than Danner. There are many different manufacturing standards that Red Wing and Irish Setter boots are made to. The boots where the sole could literally fall off are not goodyear welted. I had complaints of the soles falling apart mostly. But I will try to tackle what I feel are several gross misrepresentations of buy it for life quality Red Wing boots. I don't even know where to start with your post because much of what you said is very off base. No insulation, no lug soles, and I think you'd have to be crazy to pay $300+ for a pair of boots that are going to be coated in mud, wet concrete, hydraulic fluid, motor oil and sewage on a regular basis. To me they look more like a 'boutique' line for hipsters. Now, I realize Red Wing still has a separate line that is made in the US, but I've looked them over and they aren't what I'd consider workboots. It's a little more if you do a custom order or need steel toes or something. It's a small, family-owned company in the mountains of Tennessee that sells handmade, simple, solid, bombproof workboots that are comfortable as hell right out of the box, look good, and can take a beating. I could always take them back, but I hate returning boots just when I'm getting them broken in.Įventually I got sick of all the problems and switched. Inconsistent sizing, weird quality issues, waterproofing that didn't hold up, seams that would blow out. On average, I'd have them resoled every other year, and replace them after 4 years.Ībout 5 or 6 years ago things started changing.
